    This Friday, "Remnants" at the Dayton Visual Arts Center opens. As part of this exhibition curated by Eileen Carr, I have several anthotype photograms from the Somnambulist series on view as well as a grouping of the Barbie sleepwear anthotypes (the cover image for this website).     I have two anthotypes that are part of the "Re-Adapt" exhibition at the Massillon Museum in Massillon, OH. Participating artists were assigned objects from the museums permanent collection to create new work. The exhibition runs from June 4th - September 25, 2016.     Scatter / Hoard is now on view at the newest branch of the Dayton Metropolitan Library. This commission of 54 Vandyke Brown Prints and Cyanotypes was created for the Quiet Reading room and features two sections of photographs, one of burr oak acorns and the other of maple seeds.

    Bridgette Bogle and I both were honored with awards in a Miami Valley region art exhibition juried by Sean Wilkinson! Bridgette Bogle received a second place award at the Rosewood Art Center's 25th Annual Works on Paper exhibition for her drawing and collage piece "Winter Drawing, Descent". I received a first place award for the anthotype, "Barbie Longsleeve Nightgown and Slippers."

    From October 27 – December 8, 2013 the Robert and Elaine Stein Galleries will present selected works by artists from across the United States. The works use camera-less photographic processes. Among the processes used are photograms, scanograms, lumen prints, chemigrams, and photogenic drawings: all of which describe methods where light is used to capture an image directly onto a surface.

    Peignoir with Hidden Shorts, Pirate Chic and Red Tulip (Basic) Little Gown be included in the Ohio Art League's Annual Fall Juried exhibition. The juror this year is Melissa Vogely Woods. The exhibition will be shown in the Fort Hayes Shot Tower Gallery in Columbus, Ohio. An opening reception is scheduled for 6 - 8 pm on Thursday, October 24th. and a closing reception is also planned for Friday, December 6th from 5:30 - 7:30 pm.

    Two of the anthotypes were selected for awards at the 2013 edition of the Ohio State Fair Fine Arts exhibition. Red Tulip (Acidic) Peignoir #1 was awarded an Ohio Arts Council Professional Artist Award and Tulip (Basic) Little Gown was recognized with a Juror's Choice Professional Award.

    Photography's Back to the Future includes three Vandyke Brown Installations. Don't Take This Personally, Mis-mitosis, and Forty-six will be on view at the Riffe Gallery through July 7th.     It's officially official. I am a recipient of a 2013 Individual Excellence Award from the Ohio Arts Council. This is a professional fellowship provided by the OAC to promote the creation and viewing of work by Ohio based artists. This is my third such grant from the OAC.

    Dayton was well represented with four individuals receiving awards in photo this year and at least one other artist in 2-D / 3- D.

    Forty-six is will be exhibited as part of Icebreaker 4, an all media, un-themed juried show at Denver’s IceCube gallery. The gallery is located at 3320 Walnut Street in Denver, Colorado. The show was juried by Nora Burnett Abrams, the Associate Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver. An opening reception is scheduled for March 8th, 5-9pm and a Juror’s Conversation event is planned for March 14, 3:30pm.

    The exhibition will be on view from March 7th through March 30th.

    "In Vivo" closes this Saturday at the Dayton Visual Arts Center. There will be an "assembly" of the Saffron Lab Coat at 4pm to mark the end of the in-progress piece that has been exposing in the front of the gallery since Sept. 13th.

    Diane Stemper, Erin Holscher-Almazan and myself are showing the sequel to our successful Columbus exhibition "The Naturalists" from March of 2011.     The usual suspects.

    Three pieces, Pluot, Japanes Pear and Honey Crisp, are part of the annual Fine Arts exhibition at the Ohio State Fair. This is a great exhibition that runs concurrent with the state fair bringing in a very diverse group of visitors to see work that is made by Ohio artists at the professional and amateur level. An opening reception is scheduled for next Tuesday, July 24th from 6-8pm and the exhibition continues during the entire run of the state fair from July 25th through August 4th.

    Dayton Visual Arts Center is previewing their 17th Annual Art Auction at their gallery at 118 North Jefferson Street in downtown Dayton. "Japanese Pear" is on display to the left of Fred Niles' "Lake Michigan Landscape". The preview exhibit will run up until April 25th.

    Additionally "Pluot" is hanging in the Garden State on display at Red Filter gallery in Lambertville, New Jersey through April 22nd.

    Some publication news. Malin Fabbi’s book, Anthotypes – Explore the darkroom in your garden and make photographs using plants, has been published.

    This is a book that I was able to proof read and offer suggestions. Additionally, two of the pre-Boston Anthotypes included the faded and rained upon Clem Wolford Pajama Top in pokeberry (p. 83, 85), are included within the book. The Henbit anthotype related images can be found on pages 28 and page 74.

    I have work in an exhibition of alternative photographic processes organized by the Kiernan gallery and juried by Christopher James.     Tonight is the opening for the next exhibition by the Dayton Society of Painters and Sculptors, “Past, Present and Future”. My work is paired with the early twentieth century pictorialist photographer Jane Reece. The exhibition runs from tonight, December 2nd, through January 8th. The galleries of the DSPS are located at 48 High Street in Dayton, Ohio.

    "Apple" and "Don't Take This Personally" will both be included in the Ohio Art League's Annual Fall Juried exhibition. The juror this year is Liz Maugans is a co-founder and Managing Director of Zygote Press, Inc. The exhibition is located at Schnormeier Gallery, 221 South Main Street, Mount Vernon, OH 43050 and will run from November 18, 2011 - January 7, 2012.     Target gallery, part of the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, Virgina will be exhibiting two prints from Forces of Nature along with work by Tracy Longley-Cook during the month of November as part of the exhibition "Transferred". The exhibition, juried by Regina DeLuise, will open on November 5th and run through December 4th.

    The exhibition is part of FotoWeek DC and a reception is planned for November 10th, from 6-8pm which includes a talk by Ms. DeLuise.

    Fresh: Ohio ended yesterday but there is still time to catch the last day of ArtPrize and from walking at the gallery of the Greater Grand Rapids Arts Coucil. Sacred Heart and Apple will be on view in Transferred, an exhibition of alternative photography juried by Regina Deluise which is part of Fotoweek D.C. The exhibition dates are November 5th - 27th.

    Red Rose Pajama Pants will be on display at Sinclair Community College's Triangle gallery from September 6th through Oct. 6th.     Up on view in the Carnegie Gallery of the Columbus Metropolitan Library (the main branch downtown) is the 100th Annual Spring Juried Exhibition organized by the Ohio Art League. This historical exhibition was juried by Ohio State University Professor of Sculpture, Todd Slaughter. The opening reception is Thursday, May 12, 6 - 8 p.m. in the Carnegie Gallery (2nd Floor) and the exhibition runs through June 24th.

    Bridgette Bogle has a painting and I have the vandyke brown print(s) "Flowers from a Cigar Tree" (see my spash image on the homepage at www.francisschanberger.com) on view in this exhibition.

    The silent auctions start at 6:30 p.m.; live auction begins at 8 p.m. "Hairy Cemetery Nut" will be somewhere in the Ponitz Center for viewing and bidding.

    Ohio Art League's 100th Annual Spring Juried show is right around the corner. This year the exhibition was juried by Todd Slaughter of the Ohio State University. The exhibition will be held on the 2nd floor of the Main Branch of the Columbus Metropolitan library within sight of Todd's installation that reaches from the ceiling down to the 2nd and 3rd floors of the entrance. I'll be installing "Flowers from a Cigar (Catalpa) Tree" at the library sometime next week.

    The Naturalists was deinstalled today ending a month long run at the Ohio Art League Gallery. Do not be dismayed. The exhibition will grow to fill the much larger Dayton Visual Arts Center in September 2012.

    There are about two more weeks to catch "Here's Looking at You: Portraits in Ohio" at the Riffe Gallery across from the Ohio State House in downtown Columbus.

    "Forces of Nature" makes it way to the O.C. Costa Mesa, California that is. From March 7th through April 18th, my Vandyke Brown prints will be on display in the photography gallery of Orange Coast College.

    The Riffe Gallery in Columbus, Ohio will be exhibiting the work of fourteen artists in a survey of contemporary portraiture as practiced in Ohio.     The artist talk for ImageOhio 11 will be on Friday, February 11th at 1:30pm. ImageOhio is an annual exhibition surveying work in photography and video made by artists living and working in Ohio.

    This year's juror is Linde Brady, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison currently writing her dissertation on the work of American photographer Paul Outerbridge. Her research interests include American and European modernism with emphasis on the politics of museum display, race and gender identity, and mass advertising culture. She also specializes in the history of photography, and contemporary art and theory. Her M.A. thesis was entitled “Cabinets of Wonder, Objects of Critique: The Museums of Fred Wilson and Mark Dion.” She received her B.A. in art history from the University of Chicago.

    Image Ohio 11

    One of the composite pieces seen in "from walking", "roots with dirt clumps in sixteen pieces", will be exhibited in the eleventh addition of Image Ohio, an annual showcase of video and still image photography by Ohio artists.

    I have been honored with a commission by the Ohio Arts Council to create seven photographs specifically to recognize arts patrons, organizations, individual artists, arts administrators, and businesses that have supported the arts in Ohio.     Today is the last day for Soho Photo Alternative Processes Exhibition.

    The Fifth Annual Ohio Online Visual Artists Registry exhibition, a.k.a. OOVAR, is up and open to the public in downtown Columbus, Ohio until January 3rd, 2011. The Award Reception will be Saturday, December 11 from 2-3:30 in the Arts & Media Division of Main Library. This is an annual juried exhibition that draws upon artists who are part of this statewide visual resource.

    "Peninsular Boot" and "Two Seed Pods Colliding" are both in this exhibition.

    and if you happen to be in Kalamazoo, Michigan, "Forces of Nature" continues to be shown at the Western Michigan Cancer Center.

    "from walking" ended last Thursday. I am going to try and finish up documenting the work from that exhibit during the next few days. In the meantime, January is looming closer which means "Here’s Looking at You: Portraits in Ohio" at the Riffe gallery and Image Ohio 11 which will feature "Roots with Dirt Clumps in 16 Pieces". The Riffe exhibition will feature all fourteen of the "Mis-Taken" portraits.

    Soho Photo Gallery will be taking part in the Tribeca Gallery Preview event on Saturday, November 13th. Soho Photo is currently showing the Sixth Annual Alternative Processes Competition, juried by France Scully Osterman and Mark Osterman, in the gallery upstairs along with Dan Burkholder's "The Next Phase: iPhone Photographs". Both exhibitions will run from Nov. 2nd until December 4th. I have two Vandyke Brown Prints in this showing of Altenative Processes: "Sting Ray / Kite" (Honorable Mention) and "Two Leaf Stems".

    Other galleries taking part in the Tribeca Gallery Preview are Trans.LUXE Gallery, carriage trade, Cheryl Hazan Gallery, KS Art, Pelavin Gallery, Ethan Cohen Fine Arts, Hal Bromm, and the MELA Foundation.
